World War II: The Battle of Iwo Jima

This battle took place on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima from February 19^th 1944 to March 26^th 1945. It was a devastating battle between America and Japan. Germany joined this battle later on.

 It was the bloodiest battle in United States Marine Corps history. There were 6,821 Americans dead in the battle. This battle is the scene of the famous flag photograph, shown below. Joe Rosenthal, the photographer, was born on October 9^th, 1911. He is not at all famous now, but this picture is because it symbolizes the end of the worst battle in Marines history. The battle terrified those lived through it.
